Reactive transport modeling of geologic CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers: the influence of intra-aquifer shales and the relataive effectiveness of structural, solubility, and mineral trapping during prograde and retrograde sequestration

چکیده
One of the industrial revolution’s most insidious environmental legacies—dangerous atmospheric concentrations of CO2—can no longer be ignored. With “business-as-usual” projections rapidly approaching a grim horizon of climatic consequences, there is an urgent need to develop innovative strategies for CO2 stabilization that either reduce emissions through improved energy efficiency, or eliminate them through waste-stream capture and sequestration. The latter approach currently stands alone as a potential near-term means of significantly curbing atmospheric CO2 emissions.

Evaluation of the impact of CO2, aqueous fluid, and reservoir rock interactions on the geologic sequestration of CO2, with special emphasis on economic implications
Lowering the costs of front-end processes in the geologic sequestration of CO2 can dramatically lower the overall costs. One approach is to sequester less-pure CO2 waste streams that are less expensive or require less energy to separate from flue gas, a coal gasification process, etc. The objective of this research is to evaluate the impacts of an impure CO2 waste stream on geologic sequestrati...

CO2 can be trapped a...
متن کاملResidual trapping, solubility trapping and capillary pinning complement each other to limit CO2 migration in deep saline aquifers
We derive a theoretical model for the post-injection migration of a CO2 gravity current in a confined, sloping aquifer under the influence of residual trapping, solubility trapping, and capillary pinning. The resulting model consists of two coupled partial differential equations that describe the local thickness of the buoyant CO2 current and the thickness of the mound of brine saturated with d...

Geologic sequestration in depleted oil reservoirs, saline aquifers, etc. has been proposed as an effective way to stabilize the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and thus mitigate its effect on global climate change. We have developed a massively parallel 3-D reservoir simulator PFLOTRAN for modeling supercritical CO2 sequestration in geologic formations based on continuum scale mass and e...
متن کاملA mathematical model of the footprint of the CO[subscript 2] plume during and after injection in deep saline aquifer systems
We present a sharp-interface mathematical model of CO2 migration in saline aquifers, which accounts for gravity override, capillary trapping, natural groundwater flow, and the shape of the plume during the injection period. The model leads to a nonlinear advection–diffusion equation, where the diffusive term is due to buoyancy forces, not physical diffusion. For the case of interest in geologic...
